New Scottish Scheme To Boost Recycling
A £5 million fund has been launched to make sure more household plastic waste is recycled across Scotland.
The new Plastics Capital Grant Programme is being offered by waste watchdog WRAP as part of the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Scotland initiative.
Funding is available to cover the capital costs of developing the additional infrastructure needed to sort, recycle and reprocess household plastics. It is hoped the scheme will cut the amount of waste sent to landfill by 20,000 tonnes a year.
The fund is open to applications from organisations spanning all sizes and sectors.
Grants covering up to 30% of the total eligible costs are available for projects that meet the following requirements:
- Are located in Scotland.
- Require capital investment to establish one or more facilities in Scotland that can, at a minimum, segregate plastic waste and, preferably, sort by polymer type.
- Process inputs from household plastic waste streams in Scotland that would otherwise go to landfill (commercial, industrial and agricultural waste may be included).
- Involve proven technologies.
- Demonstrate local need for the facility and no displacement with existing facilities.
- Will be fully installed and operational by 31 December 2013.
- Are able to demonstrate that project viability is dependent on grant funding.
- Are commercially sustainable in the medium and long-term and result in additional annual output for a minimum of five years from the date of operation.
- Demonstrate clearly defined and, where possible, secured end markets for the output of the project.
Applications have to be made by 30 August. Shortlisted bidders will be invited to present their ideas to a panel of experts during October as part of the overall assessment process.
